In some plants, an outgrowth looking like a third integument grows around the ovule and is called as aril. The juicy edible part in litchi on the seed surface is aril. Whereas a small corky outgrowth somewhat whitish in colour formed at the micropyle of the seed is known as caruncle. (Example: Castor seed).
