ANSWER

  • Geothermal power comes from the earth in the form of stored heat.
  • Both biomass and geothermal power sources are renewable alternative energies that are clean and efficient.
  • Although they both come from entirely natural sources, the first is a product of organic waste while the other is heat generated within the earth.

Biogas: Biogas is a gaseous fuel. It is developed from organic wastes like dead plants, farm wastes, kitchen wastes, animal and human wastes. The organic waste is decomposed by bacteria in biogas digesters to emit biogas which is essentially a mixture of methane and carbon dioxide. It is useful for cooking and lighting homes. Large amounts of organic manures are produced in biogas plants.

Geothermal Energy: Heat energy obtained from the Earth is called geothermal energy. For several years, geothermal energy has been used for cooking, heating and bathing (hot springs). It is a clean and eco-friendly source of energy. The USA has the world's largest geothermal power plants, followed by New Zealand, Iceland, Philippines and Central America. Other countries are Italy, Russia, Japan and Turkey which produce electricity from geothermal energy. In India, geothermal power comes from geothermal springs. The Himalayan region, the Godavari Valley, and the Son-Narmada-Tapi rift zones have geothermal springs. Geothermal plants are located in Manikaran in Himachal Pradesh and Puga Valley in Ladakh.
