The amount of oxygen required by microorganisms to stabilize decomposable organic matter present in a certain volume of a sample of water, is called Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD).
Whereas, Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) is the amount of oxygen required to oxidize and stabilize the organic and inorganic matter present in a certain volume of water sample. It is measured by using a chemical oxidizing agent.
