Roasting is the process in which the ore is heated below its melting point in presence of air to oxidise the impurities. eg: carbon, sulphur etc removed as their gaseous oxides.

Calcination is the process of heating the ore below its melting point an absence of air to remove volatile impurities like arsenic etc.

sgwaeutraav: u r wrong...calcination is above melting point ie a high temperature and in the presence of air....

hey friend,
here's your answer,
The process of conversion of the concentrated ore to it's oxide at a high temperature in the presence of excess air is called calcination. Usually carbonate ores are roasted ,therefore carbon dioxide is evolved.
whereas,
the process of conversion of the concentrated ore to it's oxide at a low temperature in the absence of air is called roasting.Usually sulphide ores are roasted and therefore ,sulphur dioxide is evolved.
hope it helps you........!!

yuddhveersingh221: ok
sgwaeutraav: i checked yaar.....
yuddhveersingh221: byee
vishal354: yuddh u r right
vishal354: calcination is done in the absence of air as it already contain oxygen
sgwaeutraav: oops...srry...m only..wrong.....i interchanged...srry...vry much both of uh....srry...once again..
yuddhveersingh221: no its ok
