Wood has cells which can reproduce themselves, thus a living organism. Stone cannot reproduce itself, thus not a living organism.

They have general physical differences: Wood can float on water Stones will sink. Wood will burn and Stones will not. Wood will decay and Stones will not. These are just a few differences and there are exceptions to each statement. That is what makes the world so interesting.
