A positively charged particle is known as a cation and a negatively charged particle is known as anion.

Explanation:

Cations are formed after losing electrons and are mostly metals. since they lose electrons , the number of protons they hold is more than the electrons they hold and the charge obtained is positive.  Anions are formed by gaining electrons and are mostly non metals. as they gain electrons , the number of electrons they gain is comparatively higher than that of protons and the charge acquired is negative.

During electrolysis the cations go towards negatively charged cathode and anions  go towards positively charged anodes. remember it this way - cations to cathode and anions to anode and always , they are attracted by oppositely charged particles

more the no. of protons , more the positive charge

more the no. of electrons , more the negative charge
