Following are the main difference between the small-scale and cottage industries:-

Small-scale industries are mainly located in urban areas as separate establishments, whereas the cottage industries are generally associated with agriculture and provide subsidiary employment in rural areas.

Small-scale industries produce goods with mechanized equipment and it employs outside labour. On the other hand, cottage industries are mostly operated by hand and carried on mainly with the help of the members of the family.

Cottage industries produce goods for meeting local requirements whereas small industries provide goods to meet the demand for the people living in a wider area.

Cottage industries produce in a very small scale and require very little investment. They are mostly run by the family members, hence no outside work is required. only small tools and implements are used in these industries. Farmers and craftsmen in their free time make goods like handlooms and handicrafts. While rural industries produces goods on a small scale , employs some people and requires an investment which is not very large . In this industry, machines are used to make goods. The raw material is obtained from outside the town and the products are also sold through a network of traders. And these types of industries produce cloth , paper goods, toys, furniture, machine parts, electrical goods, utensils, leather goods, etc.
