Formally, a democracy is a country where regular elections are held in which people vote to elect a government. However, to be a good democracy, certain other features are required.
1. Rule of law that prevents the government from carrying out illegal and unconstitutional activities.
2. Respect for the fundamental rights of citizens by government authorities.
3. An alert judiciary that can prevent excesses by the government.
4. Respect for diversity of culture, lifestyle and opinion among the citizens.
5. Accountability of the government towards the legislature.
