Density is an mass divided by volume It is told as X gms. per cubic cms. Relative density is comparison of density with that of water. So it is a pure no. density of water being one gm. per cc; in cgs system; the numerical value of density and relative value of density is the same. Relative density is referred as sp. gravity.

relative density of a substance is defined as the ratio of the density of the substance to the density of water .the symbol used for relative density is R.D
R.D=density of the substance /density of water
there is no unit of relative density because it is in ratio
density of the substance is its mass per unit volume.
density-mass of the substance/volume of the substance. S.I unit of density is kg /m3
