Whenever human demand of water exceeds the natural availability of water, the result is drought. It is a prolonged period of abnormally low rainfall; a shortage of water resulting from this dry spell. A drought is a period of below average precipitation in a given region, result in prolonged shortage of water supply.

Water deficit is the amount  of available water removed from the soil within the vegetations active rooting depth, or the amount of water required to bring the soil to the field capacity.
