Collisions come in two main types '“ elastic and inelastic collisions. An elastic collision is a collision where the colliding objects bounce back without undergoing any deformation or heat generation. An inelastic collision is a collision where the colliding objects are distorted and heat is generated.
In an elastic collision, there is no loss of kinetic energy whereas in an inelastic collision there is a loss of kinetic energy which is transformed into other forms of energy.
ELASTIC Collision: Here, both kinetic energy and momentum remain conserved throughout. As there is no loss of energy whatsoever, in reality, an example of a perfectly elastic collision cannot be seen in our everyday experience. The collision between atoms of gases is perfectly elastic. The collision between rigid billiard balls causes negligible loss of energy, they are considered elastic even if not perfectly elastic.
INELASTIC Collision: Here, the kinetic energy is lost, although the momentum is a conserved quantity. The energy lost is changed into thermal energy, sound energy, etc. If two bodies collide and then stick together becoming one body, it's called perfectly inelastic. However, the real-world collision occurs somewhere between elastic and inelastic. A ball dropped from height h, bounces back to a height less than h, this collision is called an inelastic collision.
