Add sodium bi carbonate NaHCO3 and effervescence occurs with the evolution of CO2 in case of ethanoic acid .But ethanol does not show any reaction.

Ethanoic acid is a weak acid so it does not liberate carbon dioxide much it's concentration is negligible

Ethanol does not turn blue litmus red while ethanoic acid does it
