Tropicalforests are characterized by the greatest diversity of species. They occur nearthe equator, within the area bounded by latitudes 23.5 degrees N and 23.5degrees S. One of the major characteristics of tropical forests is theirdistinct seasonality: winter is absent, and only two seasons are present (rainyand dry).

Around the Mediterranean Sea this vegetationis called macchie, maquis, or garigue; it is known as chaparral in southwestern North America, as Cape flora in southern Africa, and as mallee in southwestern Australia. See also chaparral; maquis; mallee.

Mediterranean forests, woodlands, and scrub are generally characterized by dry summers and rainy winters, although in some areas rainfall may be uniform. Summers are typically hot in low-lying inland locations but can be cool near colder seas. Winters are typically mild to cool in low-lying locations but can be cold in inland and higher locations. All these ecoregions are highly distinctive, collectively harboring 10% of the Earth's plant species.[1]
