Before the French revolution, French society was divided into estates of the realm.
The ancient regime of France divided society in three estates.
The First estate stood for the influential and respectable clergymen, the ones involved in educational and religious activities and the activities of imparting education.
Whereas, the Third Estate stood for the estate of commoners.
The First estate was sort of what aristocracy was in British society.
It could be interesting to note the king didn't belong to any estate.
