Answer:

Differentiate between floods and drought:

A flood is an excess of water, while a drought is a prolonged lack of water. India faces both and sometimes at the same time. Unusual rainfall patterns are nowdays becoming commonplace, reason of natural disasters such as droughts and floods which have more to do with the timing of rainfall than the amount of rainfall. Recent monsoons in India have been extreme seasons, ranging from long dry spells to excessive rainfall. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's (IPCC) latest report AR6 predicts that South Asia, including India, will see more extreme weather events in the coming years. Peninsular India may see more extreme heat and drought and more extreme rainfall. When weather patterns deviate from the norm, farmers whose livelihoods depend on forecasted weather conditions are among those who bear the brunt. This in turn affects India's food and water security. In this series, we look at trends in floods and droughts in India and the climate crisis that is exacerbating them.
