Gases like methane and carbon dioxide have the capability to absorb heat energy. Such gasses are called as green house gasses. These gasses are useful in maintaining optimum temperature during the night.
When the concentration of green house gasses increases in the atmosphere, heat accumulation increases in the atmosphere. This leads to overall increase in atmospheric temperature. This excess heat can cause melting of polar ice caps.
The phenomenon of rise in atmospheric temperature due to increase in concentration of green house gasses is called as Global warming.
