Difference between Individual and Social aims

The individual aim is based on the Philosophy of Naturalism. Whereas Social aim is based on the philosophy of Pragmatism.

This aim gives importance to the biological heredity of man. While Social aim gives importance to the social heredity of man.

The individual aim emphasizes the educational technological aspect. Whereas, Social aim emphasizes on socio-economic aspect of education.

Also, individual aims at the development of man’s biological potential. On the other hand, social aims at the attainment of social efficiency of man.

Individual aims favorably consider nature and need the individual. While the social aim is favorably to consider the need of society at the cost of the individual.

Individual aim gives full freedom to the individual for development. But, social aims give full authority to the state.

Also, the individual aims to maintain that social development is subordinate to individual development. While social aims maintain that individual development is subordinate to social development.

The aim of the individual aim is backed by the British philosopher-Percy Nunn. While the aim of social aim is backed by the American philosopher-John Dewey.

The differences between individual and social aims of education are-

1.  The motives of education are widely distributed between its individual and social aim. Individual aim talks about the development and prosperity of an individual whereas the social aim considers collective growth.

2. The individual aim of education is very isolated and unattached contradicting the social aim of education which extent its belief to a collaborative concept.

3. Many think that individual aim is important because every individual has a unique personality and differs from each other. Education and excelling in this field depend on the individual. Individuals comprise a society and individual development can lead to collective development. Whereas, some think that social aim considers everyone. Education is directed towards the development and well-being of the state, as a whole and individuality hold no unique value.
