Differentiate between infiltration rate and percolation rate
Answers
Infiltration Rate: The rate at which the speed of the water is absorbed by the soil during rain fall or man-made sources is known as infiltration. The speed of infiltration is measured in terms of water absorbed per hour and the values changes in inches or millimeters Infiltration happens closer to the surface of the soil. It delivers water from the surface into the soil and plant rooting zone
Percolation Rate: It’s a process opposite to infiltration. The outward motion of water from the soil and rock layers. Percolation moves the water through the soil profile to replenish ground water supplies or becomes a part of sub-surface run-off process.
Hence it is the rate at which water descends from the soil layer.
Infiltration- The rate at which waters enters through the soil.
Percolation- The rate at which water flow or trickles through the soil
