differentiate between metal and nonmetal om the basis of their chemical properties
Answers
Hi.
First,
Chemical Properties of Metals
1. Metals react with Oxygen to produce basic oxides.
This means that metals (say Magnesium) react with Oxygen to produce metal oxides that are basic in nature.
For example, If Magnesium (Mg) is burnt in the presence of Oxygen (O₂), MagnesiumOxide is formed and when it is tested with red litmus paper, it turns blue showing that it is basic in nature. The reaction that takes place is as follows:
2Mg + O₂ → 2MgO
2. Metals react with water to form Metal Hydroxides and release Hydrogen gas.
This means that if a metal reacts with water, metal hydroxides are formed and hydrogen gas is released in the air.
For example, If Magnesium reacts with water, MagnesiumHydroxide is formed and hydrogen gas is released in the air. The reaction that takes place is as follows:
2Mg + 2H₂O → 2MgOH + H₂
3. Metals react with Dilute Acids to form metal salts and hydrogen gas.
This means that if a metal reacts with dilute acid, metal salts are formed and hydrogen gas is evolved.
For example, If Sodium reacts with dil Hydrochloric Acid, SodiumChloride is formed and hydrogen gas is evolved. The reaction that takes place is as below:
2Na + 2HCl → 2NaCl + H₂
Now,
Chemical Properties of Non-Metals
1. Non-metals react with oxygen to form acidic oxides.
This means that non-metals react with Oxygen to produce oxides that are acidic in nature.
For example, If Carbon (C) is burnt in the presence of Oxygen (O₂), Carbon-Dioxide is formed and when it is tested with blue litmus paper, it turns red showing that it is acidic in nature. The reaction that takes place is as follows:
2C + O₂ → 2CO₂
2. Non-metals don't react with water.
3. Non-metals don't react with dilute acids.
Hope it was helpful!
――――――
1. Oxides of metal are basic in nature.
2. Metals displace hydrogen from dilute acids.
3. Metals form chlorides are electrovalent or ionic compounds.
4. They can displace hydrogen from water.

Non Metals
―――――――――
1. Oxides of non metals are acidic in nature.
2. They cannot displace hydrogen from dilute acids.
3. Non metals form chlorides are covalent compounds.
4. They cannot displace hydrogen from water.
