The microsystem is the small, immediate environment the child lives in. Children's microsystems will include any immediate relationships or organizations they interacts with, such as their immediate family or caregivers and their school or daycare.

The mesosystem is the second level of Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory. It consists of interactions between two microsystems. Like microsystems, mesosystems affect the child directly. That is, the child is actively able to engage and socialize with others in the mesosystem.
