Parliamentary form of government

  1. Adopted on British pattern.
  2. Close relationship between legislature and executive.
  3. Present at both centre amd state.
  4. Council of ministers elected from amonst the members of legislature.
  5. Holds the office as long as it continues to enjoy the confidence of the legislature.
  6. Head of the state i.e. the President is a nominal head and enjoys only nominal powers.
  7. Real powers are exercised by the Prime Minister and his council of ministers.

Federal form of government

  1. Constitution of federation is written and rigid.
  2. It divides the powers between the centre and the states.
  3. There is an independent judiciary which interprets the constitution and settles the disputes.
  4. India has a federal system but with a difference.
  5. Central government at national level also called union government is so powerful that it can interfere in the matters of state government according to their wish anytime.
  6. Due to this sometimes it appears that India is not really a federation but a unitary state.
  7. Constitution of India has several features of a federation combined with some elements of a unitary state.
  8. Some people describe India as a federation with a very strong central government.
