Primary prodution is usually exclusively reserved for plants and autotrophs. Basically anything that can produce energy from sunlight. Plants do not feed on anything, they use sunlight and photosynthesis to create energy. They are the first level of biomass in a trophic cascade.
Secondary production is a misleading name because it refers to the first consumer of energy. This organism will consume a primary producer. For example, if our primary producer is grass, a secondary producer may be a cow, which consumes the grass for energy.
