RER refers to the rough endoplasmic reticulum. It is known by its name because of the presence of ribosomes attached on the surface of this reticulum. The main function of RER is to made protein that is necessary for the building of cell membrane. Proteins are also required by the cells for variety of needs Like transportation, communication, etc
SER refers to smooth endoplasmic reticulum. It lacks in the presence of ribosomes and are seen as smooth. The function of it is to produce lipids.
