The most basic difference RER and SER is the presence of ribsomes. when ribsomes attached from the surface of an ER, it gives a characteristic rough appearances; hence it called rough ER. Hence on the other word smoth does not have ribsomes on its surface . it possess ribsomes attached to membrane
