Smooth Endoplacmic Reticulum (SER)

  • Ribosomes - Ribosomes on surface are absent.

  • Function - Manufacturing of lipids and fats.

  • It occurs in Adipocytes (fat cells).

  • Some of lipids and proteins help in building the cell membrane. This process is known as membrane biogenesis.

Rough Endoplacmic Reticulum (RER)

  • Ribosomes - Ribosomes on surface of ER present.

  • Function - Ribosomes are sites of protein synthesis.

  • It occurs in plasma cells (produce antibodies).

  • Rough endoplacmic reticulum helps in the synthesis of steroid hormones.
