Answer:

Friction may be classified in two types on basis of state of motion :

Static friction

Kinetic friction

Static friction: friction acting between two non moving bodies (and if you are wondering , how the hell friction is working on a static body , then see that the static friction is measured by measuring force required to just move the body i.e., just that force which is maximum insufficient to move the body).

Kinetic friction: Friction acting between two bodies which are in relative motion (rolling or sliding )

Kinetic friction is further divided into sliding friction and rolling friction.

Now comes the point…

Sliding friction : The friction acting between two relatively sliding and is measured as the force required to just move the body over the other .

What is the difference between sliding friction and rolling friction?

{(Somehow tricky ? Yes , sliding friction is only little bit more than the static friction)}***

definitely to the point …this time…

Rolling friction : friction that acts between two bodies when one of them rolls over the other and is just sufficient to let the body roll over the other .

THE CATCH : Rolling friction is essentially like static friction , but classified in kinetic friction because of occurrence in state of motion, the difference being that while rolling body rolls (pure rolling) over the other body, what happens is that every successive point on rolling body comes in contact with ground (second body) and goes by, being acted upon by ……..? Yes …static friction. This is the way rolling friction works. The magnitude of rolling friction may or may not be exactly equal to the static friction between the bodies . It may be less than or equal to static friction (only in case of pure rolling).

Explanation:

Rolling friction takes place when an object rolls on the surface. Sliding friction takes place when two surfaces are rubbed against each other. Rolling friction takes place due to deformation of surfaces.
