Soaps                                                           Detergents

They are Sodium or potassium                    They are long chain sodium salts of                

salts of long chain carboxylic acids             Benzene sulphonic acids or alkyl

                                                                       sulphate

Obtained from natural sources                    Obtained from synthetic sources

Produces scum in hard water                      Hard water does not affect it's                          

                                                                      cleaning action.

the solution of soap and detergent are hypertonic compared to the skin of your fingers therefore the skin cells lose water due to exosmosis.hence the skin of your fingers shrink.
