soaps are non biodegradable while detergents are bio degradable
soaps does not react in hard water and forms while detergents does not
soaps are made up of calcium and magnesium salts while detergents are made up of ammonium or sulphonate salts

Soaps are sodium or potassium salts of long chain carboxylic acid while detergents are sulphonate or ammonium salts of long chain carboxylic acids.

Soaps do form lather while detergents do not form lather.

Soaps react with hard water while detergents dissolve in hard water.
