Answer:

The Roman and Islamic architectural styles were different from each other in a number of ways:

1) Roman had ANTHROPOMORPHIC GODS. Thus their temples had statues and figures of gods. Their buildings chronicled the triumphs of Rome (like conquest and LOOT OF JERUSALEM) AND depicted men and women. Later, Roman EMPERORS WERE DEIFIED. Both anthropomorphic depiction of god and deification of men are forbidden in Islam. Thus Islamic buildings are devoid of such themes.

2) Both in Rome and Islamic domains, those who built buildings sought to convey their power. But this was achieved differently. At Rome, the very facade of the buildings conveyed grandeur through their intricate and elaborate design. But Islam discourages the glorification of a person, thus the front was simple. Islamic buildings show grandeur through their dimension.

Related to this is the fact that Islam stressed on personal nature of devotion, thus the inner part of the mosques was more intricately decorated. This created ARCHITECTURE OF THE VEIL, i.e. simple exterior that hides elaborately decorated interior.

3) While there was emphasis on open space in both, it was used differently. Roman used open space in their PIAZZAS, AGORAS AND AMPHITHEATRES (SEMI-ENCLOSED), on the other hand Islam used open space in situating buildings in gardens (CHAHAR BAGH)

At the same time, we can see that Islamic architecture got some inspiration from Roman architecture. Most important is perhaps DOMES. First seen at the PANTHEON, it became an inseparable part of mosques. Both Roman and Islamic architects LEARNT THE ART OF MOZAIC FROM PERSIA and used it profusely.
