Early nationalists - 1. They used the the three p's - prayer , petitions and protests
2 they belonged to upper middle class usually
3 they viewed the British rule in a positive light
4 they relied on the solemn promises made by the British.

Assertive nationalists - 1 they believed in the use of aggressive methods like swadeshi and boycott
2 they had more influence on the masses and brought all classes into the struggle
3 they condemned British rule and held it responsible for indias problems
4 they did not rely on the British, bur aggressively demanded what they wanted
5 the lal, bal, pal trio were the prominent leaders of assertive nationalism
