oxides of metals are basic in nature whereas oxides of non metals are acidic in nature.So mg.oxide is a basic oxide n sulphur oxide is acidic in nature.Moreover when mgo dissolves in water it forms magnesium hydroxide whereas sulphur oxide form sulphuric acid
