A primary pollutant is an air pollutant emitted directly from a source. Whereas, a secondary pollutant is not directly emitted as such, but forms when other pollutants (primary pollutants) react in the atmosphere.

Examples of a secondary pollutant include ozone, which is formed when hydrocarbons (HC) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) combine in the presence of sunlight; NO2, which is formed as NO combines with oxygen in the air; and acid rain, which is formed when sulfur dioxide or nitrogen oxides react with water.

These pollutants are very harmful to human in several ways. Like, the Nitrogen oxide or NO2 causes Acidic rain which is very harmful to aquatic lifes, plants and human. It also disrupts the food chain.. acidic rain can kill up to 73% of organisms on the earth surface which are very rich in the decomposition processes. Etc

Differentiate between the primary and secondary pollutants and its impact on humans.

Explanation:

  • Pollutants are mainly responsible for creating or forming pollution in any form such as air, water, land, etc.
  • When pollution-causing agent is directly released from a source, it is known as a primary pollutant.
  • On the other side, the pollution-causing agent is not directly released from a source but it is leading pollution after reacting or combining with primary pollutants, it is a secondary pollutant.
  • To understand primary and secondary pollutants, air pollution can be taken as examples.
  • Primary pollutants causing air pollution are Sulphur Dioxide, Carbon monoxide, Nitrogen Oxides, etc.
  • Secondary pollutants are Photochemicals, Ozone, Sulphuric acid, etc.
  • Pollutants in any means are damaging and harming humans and other living things.
  • Due to inhaling primary or secondary pollutants, humans are getting respiratory tract infections, acid rain like problems.
