STRUCTURE OF GRAPHITE:

•In graphite each carbon atom is bonded to three other carbon atoms in the same plane giving a hexagonal array.

•One of these bonds is a double bond and hence the valency of carbon is satisfied.

•The structure of graphite is formed by layering these hexagonal arrays one above another. This way graphite forms long infinite chains.

STRUCTURE OF BUCKMINSTERFULLERENE:

• Buckminster fullerene or C-60 is a very small molecule. It does not have an infinite structure like graphite.

•It is formed by carbon atoms arranged in the shape of a football.

•The structure resembles the geodesic dome designed by US architect Buckminster Fuller.
