Explanation:

The primary function of xylem is to transport water and dissolved minerals from the root to different parts of the plant. The primary function of the phloem is to transport the prepared sugars from the leaves to different parts of the plant.

XYLEM:-

Xylem is composed of four types of cells-- Tracheids,Vessels, Xylem Parenchyma and Xylem Fibres.  It conducts water and minerals and the conduction is unidirectional. The conducting channels are tracheids and vessels. Except of Xylem parenchyma, all cells are dead. In addition to conduction, xylem provides additional mechanical strength to the plant.

PHLOEM:-

Phloem consists of five types of cells-- Sieve cells, Sieve tube, Companion cells, Phloem parenchyma, Phloem fibres. It conducts organic solutes or food materials and the conduction is bidirectional. The conducting channels are Sieve tubes. Except of Phloem fibres, all phloem cells are living cells. It doesn't provide much strength to the plant.
