differentiate between Western Mountains and Eastern Highlands of South America

The Andes are young fold mountains having active volcanic erruptions whereas the Eastern highlands are composed of old hard rocks and have Patagonian Desert which is a cold desert.

The eastern side of the Eastern Highlands slopes steeply whereas the western side is not so steep. Blue Mountain Ranges and Australian Alps, are the important mountains of this region.
