Answer: When solid iodine crystals are heated (in a beaker with hot sand) the iodine will change from a solid directly to a gas without passing through a liquid phase. This is called sublimation. ... As the iodine gas comes in contact with the cold glass it changes to a solid (but never is in liquid form).
