European populations of Homo heidelbergensis evolved into Homo neanderthalensis (the Neanderthals) while a separate population of Homo heidelbergensis in Africa evolved into our own species, Homo sapiens.

Homo heidelbergensis are the extinct species of the genus Homo . These in Africa, Europe and western Asia between 600,000 and 200,000 years ago where as Homo neanderthal were a species or subspecies of archaic humans in the genus Homo . They are believed to have extinct about 40,000 years ago.
