To me, “influence” is “taking inspiration from something which already exists in order to create something new”. This is certainly true of things like writing and painting. Picasso once said “Every artist needs a father and a mother.” This was his explanation for influence. Influences help us grown and understand as we develop our own style and in turn, influence others. This is part of the joy of creating art. On the other hand, “imitation” in the same context means “copying”. It might be skilled “imitation” but there has been no development in the way that “influence” implies.
