Intensive reading: when you read a short passage but make sure you squeeze every drop of meaning out of it. Intensive reading is about knowing the meaning and implication of every single word. You can’t do it for massive tracts of text.

Extensive reading: when you read significantly more, but you don’t get bogged down in the fine detail. You focus more on the overarching meaning of the text. Since you’re not obsessing over every word, you get the basics and can go further.
