  1. Kawashkior develops in childrens whose diets are deficient in proteins whereas Marasmus is deficiency of protein and calories.
  2. Kawashkior occur in children between 6 months and 3 yrs of age whereas Marasmus is common in infants under 1 years of age.
  3. In Kawashkior there is enlarged fatty liver and ribs are not very prominent whereas in Marasmus there is no fatty liver but Ribs become prominent on seeing .
  4. In Kawashkior Muscles reducing will be mild or absent but In Marasmus Muscles reducing severe .
  5. Person suffering from Kawashkior need adequate amount of protein but in Marasmus they need adequate amount of protein as well as Carbohydrates and Fats.

Difference between Kwashiorkor and Marasmus are :

  • 1) Cause : Kwashiorkor causes from the deficiency of protein. Whereas, Marasmus causes from the deficiency of both protien and calories.

  • 2) Symptoms : The symptoms of Kwashiorkor is thinning of muscles and limbs. On the other hand, the symptoms of Marasmus is thinning of limbs.

  • 3) Age factors : The age factor of Kwashiorkor is between the age of 6 months and 3 years of age. Whereas, the age factor of Marasmus is between 6 months and 1 year of age.

  • 4) Weight loss : There is some weight loss in Kwashiorkor. But there is severe weight loss in Marasmus.

  • 5) Requirement of nutrition : In Kwashiorkor, there is a requirement of adequate amounts of proteins. Whereas, in Marasmus, there is a requirement of adequate amounts of proteins, carbohydrates and fats.

  • 6) The texture of the skin : There is flaky paint appearance on the skin in case of Kwashiorkor. On the other hand, in case of Marasmus, the skin becomes dry and wrinkled.
