➢  Difference between Kwashiorkor and Marasmus are :

  • 1) Cause : Kwashiorkor causes from the deficiency of protein.  Whereas, Marasmus causes from the deficiency of both protien and calories.

  • 2) Symptoms : The symptoms of Kwashiorkor is thinning of muscles and limbs. On the other hand, the symptoms of Marasmus is thinning of limbs.

  • 3) Age factors : The age factor of Kwashiorkor is between the age of 6 months and 3 years of age. Whereas, the age factor of Marasmus is between 6 months and 1 year of age.

  • 4) Weight loss : There is some weight loss in Kwashiorkor.  But there is severe weight loss in Marasmus.

  • 5) Requirement of nutrition : In Kwashiorkor, there is a requirement of adequate amounts of proteins. Whereas, in Marasmus, there is a requirement of adequate amounts of proteins, carbohydrates and fats.

  • 6) The texture of the skin : There is flaky paint appearance on the skin in case of Kwashiorkor. On the other hand, in case of Marasmus, the skin becomes dry and wrinkled.
