Difference between kwashiorkor and marasmus.

Explanation:

Kwashiorkor is a kind of protein energy malnutrition in which the child above the age of one year goes underweight.

It is basically caused by protein deficiency and the child has to face excessive oedema.

Marsmus is also a kind of protein energy malnutrition but in this case the child gets severaly emaciated.

This is caused due to proteins and calories deficiency and in this case no oedema is seen.

Differentiate Between Kwashiorkor and Marasmus :-

➦ Kwashiorkor :-

  • It is a severe protein deficiency disease usually affecting young children. It is caused when mothers stop breast feeding their babies at very early age and the child is provided with poor protein quantity in his/her diet. The suffering child may die before the age of 5 years.

➦ Marasmus :-

  • It effects infants below the age of 1 year. It is caused due to the deficiency of carbohydrates, proteins and fats in the child's diet. It is caused due to sudden stoppage of breast feeding and poor carbohydrates, fats, proteins quantity in his/her diet.
