Pollination is the transfer of pollen grains from anther to the stigma.

Depending upon the means transfer of pollen , the pollination is of two types :

1) Self pollination

2)Cross pollination

Self Pollination :

1) It simply refers to the transfer of pollen grains from the anther to stigma of the same flower (involve one flower only).

2) It is independent of any external agency.

3) After a few generations , it gives rise to pure lines (homozygous).

4) It leads to less vigorous offspring.

5) In Self pollination Anthers and stigma mature at the same time.

Cross Pollination :

1) It simply refers to the transfer of pollen grains from the anther on one plant to stigma of the another plant. (involvement  of two different flowers )

2) It requires external agencies like wind, insect water or animal.

3) Pure lines may or may not obtain as it involves two diff. flowers which results in genetic variation.

4) Offspring are are vigorous.

5)Anthers and stigma mature at different times in Cross pollination.

Here's your answer....

Self pollination or autogamy is a phenomenon in which pollination is carried out in a single flower i.e, pollen from anthers land on stigma of the same flower.

It is seen in chasmogamous flower (exposed anther and stigma) and cleistogamous flower ( closed flower).

While, cross pollination is a phenomenon in which pollination is carried out between two flowers of the same plant i. e, pollen from one flower lands on stigma of another flower of the same plant.

Hope it helps you out!!
