given x^4 - 2x + 1/x^2

dy/dx = x^4 - 2x + x^-2

= 4x^3 - 2 - 2x^-3

= 4x^3 - 2/x^3 - 2

= 2 [ 2x^3 - 1/x^3 - 1 ]
