The main crop is barley, which is roasted and ground into a powder called tsampa. This was a staple food of Ladakh. The barley is also used to make local beer called chang. Other crops are wheat, vegetables, mustard, apples, and apricots.

West Bengal ranks first in paddy and vegetable production in the country. It stands second in potato production (after Uttar Pradesh). It is also the leading producer of jute, pineapple, litchi, mango and loose flowers. Cultivation of pulses, oilseeds and maize is also picking up fast.

The Flora of Ladakh comprises about 880 species. Ladakh is rich repository of medicinal and aromatic plants and other important plants which are closely associated with daily life of local inhabitants of the region. Fauna of Leh Ladakh has a great diversity, 225 species of birds and big land animals such as wild Yak,Ibex and the Predators found in Ladakh region are Snow leopard, Brown bear, Wolf and Lynx.

The fauna and flora of West Bengal possess the combined characteristics of the Himalayan and sub Himalayan Gangetic plain. The floral diversity of the state is also enriched by 4,622 species out of a total of 44,594 floral species in India, and 10.36% of our countries flora.
