Gram positive bacteria have a thick peptidoglycan layer and no outer lipid membrane whilst Gram negative bacteria have a thin peptidoglycan layer and have an outer lipid membrane.

GRAM POSITIVE÷

- Basal body of flagellum contain two rings
- mesosomes are more prominent
GRAM NEGATIVE÷
- The wall is two layered
- Wall is 8-12nm thick
- The lipid content of wall is 20-30%
- Mucopepdite content is 10-20%
- Basal body contain 4 rings
- Mesosomes are less prominent
