Gram positive bacteria have a thick peptidoglycan layer and no outer lipid membrane whilst Gram negative bacteria have a thin peptidoglycan layer and have an outer lipid membrane.

GRAM(-) AND GRAM (+)

GRAM POSITIVE÷

  1. The wall is single layered and outer membrane is absent
  2. The thickness of the wall is 20 to 25 nm
  3. The lipid content of the wall is quite low
  4. Mucopepdite content is 70-80%
  5. Basal body of flagellum contain two rings
  6. mesosomes are more prominent

GRAM NEGATIVE÷

  1. The wall is two layered
  2. Wall is 8-12nm thick
  3. The lipid content of wall is 20-30%
  4. Mucopepdite content is 10-20%
  5. Basal body contain 4 rings
  6. Mesosomes are less prominent
