Direct means which is told by a person to another one.
Indirect means which is told by another person to anyone.
I think u r confused. Let me explain it with an example :
Person 1 told something to person 2.
So the talking between those person 1 and person 2 is called direct speech.
Person 2 told that thing which person 1 had said to person3.
So the talking between person 2 and person 3 is indirect speech.
Ex: Maya said "I am feeling sad". - - - direct
Maya told to me that she was feeling sad. - - - - - indirect
