In longitudinal wave the  motion of medium is parallel to the direction of the wave.
In transverse wave  the motion of the medium is perpendicular to the direction of the wave.

in a longitudinal wave, particles of the medium vibrate in a direction parallel to the direction of propagation
compressions and rarefactions are formed.

in a transverse wave particles of the medium vibrate in a direction perpendicular to the direction of propagation.
