Respiration:

• It is a cellular process (takes place inside cells)

• Energy is released in the form of heat.

• Temperature is controlled.

• Oxidation occurs.

• Enzymes take place in the process.

Combustion:

• Not a cellular process.

• Energy is released in a single step.

• Temperature is very high.

• Already oxidised.

• No enzymes take place in this process.

\longrightarrowFuel for oxidation reaction in respiration is food whereas fuel for oxidation reaction in combustion is usually hydrocarbons.

\longrightarrowRespiration is a cellular processwhere asCombustion does not occur inside the living cell

\longrightarrowRespiration is a controlled biological process where as Combustion is an uncontrolled process.

\longrightarrowEnergy is released in a stepwise manner with different biochemical reactions in respiration where as Energy is released in a single step in combustion

\longrightarrowEnzymes are required for the process of respiration where as Enzymes are not required for combustion as it is a non-cellular process.

\longrightarrowExample of respiration: Aerobic respiration and Example of combustion : Combustion of oxygen and hydrogen into water vapour.
