Diffusion may not be able to meet all the transportation requirements of the plant because as the absorbed materials move up the plant, their concentration lessens. For diffusion to take place, materials have to move from their region of high concentration to a region of low concentration. This cannot take place in all plant cells as some cells would require input of energy to transport material against the concentration gradient. This is the reason why other transportation mechanism such as facilitated diffusion, osmosis, and active transport may be required to carry out the transportation activities.
